Story in the Making [5/?]

These are coming out far too fast for me to be able to catch up, but that's always good because that means I can schedule ahead and not have to worry so much! The Daejae muse is strong with this one.

Previous Chapter

Youngjae lay out under the stars. On the roof of their building, they had only the sounds of the city-which were quite distant-to keep them company. The silence was welcomed.

After returning home from visiting their familes-all but for the maknae and leader who had stayed because the maknae’s family prefers not to have him home for whatever reason-it was a mess down in the dorm. Himchan had abandoned his stuff all over the place and Jongup was splayed out in much the same manner as the older man’s luggage. To keep Youngjae from losing it, Daehyun had dragged him up to the roof which was exactly where they lay now.

Daehyun had been in the process of changing when Youngjae had stormed into the room and he had known right then and there that they needed to escape to keep from someone losing a limb or something. So despite being only dressed in basketball shorts, he took his friend’s hand and led him from the apartment. Youngjae complained the whole time that he was only in a muscle shirt and shorts-ironically the same matching ones that Daehyun wore. The elder man used the excuse that they were going up to the roof and no one would see them. That was enough to shut him up.

And now they lay where the mostly silence didn’t piss off Youngjae. That was a win for Daehyun.

“How was your visit home?” Youngjae asked softly, in the low tone that they always use when they were up on this roof alone. There was no worry of anyone finding them. In the dozens of times that they came up here, no one ever bothered them. This was their sanctuary. And in a sanctuary, you spoke respectfully.

Daehyun turned his head to look at his best friend, seeing Youngjae’s eyes were closed and so used this chance to observe his best friend who he hadn’t seen for a few days. They had talked most of the time they were apart anyways. “It was…nice. I found out my cousin is gay.” He hadn’t planned to say it exactly like that. He had planned to ease them into the conversation of speaking about the man that he had grown up with turning out to be a homosexual which was a horrid sin in this country. Well, now that it was out, it wasn’t like he could take it back.

The younger vocalist’s eyes open and it took him all of two seconds to sit up and turn on his side. With an elbow propping him up and his head on his hand, he looked to his best friend in shock. “Are you serious? What did everyone say? How did everyone react?” They had never spoken about this before. In Korea, you couldn’t just start a talk about homosexuality and expect it to go well. But now that Daehyun had brought it up, it would be rude to ignore him.

The man began to speak softly after a short pause, almost monotonously as though he were afraid to make his thoughts on the matter known. “Yeah…” He let out a short laugh that hardly let Youngjae know how he was feeling at that moment. “His parents disowned him…right there in front of everyone. It was at a small family gathering and he had his…boyfriend with him.” He stared up at the dark sky, observing all of the stars. “I’ve known Seungchul my whole life…we played around as kids and hung out a lot as teenagers-up until I moved here to be an idol…and I never would have guessed. He never had any girlfriends, but neither have I and I don’t think I’m gay.” That was a poor attempt at humor and Youngjae understood that. “Anyways…he cried when they disowned him. He’s not one of those flaming gays like you always hear about. He’s stronger and tougher and far more confident and assertive but…he cried. His mother and father just outright disowned him and left…”

Youngjae was silent throughout this whole thing because he doesn’t want to make Daehyun uncomfortable because he was truly okay with this and wished to know his best friend’s thoughts on this first. There was a long pause before Daehyun continued, obviously needing to gather his thoughts before saying what he felt needed to be said.

“His boyfriend is really nice. My parents like him, too. They said that…they said that Seungchul is welcome in our home any time that he’d like, with his boyfriend.” Another pregnant pause took over the conversation before Daehyun continued. “I’m okay with it…when his boyfriend, Jiyong’s his name, calmed down my cousin…I saw how happy they were.” The light smile that appeared on his features made Youngjae smile as well, in the same manner. “They look so happy and content with one another. I don’t think that’s wrong. I mean…how could it be wrong when they’re so obviously in love and…happy?”

When the elder man looked over at his friend, he realized right then and there what he had said. This wasn’t just about the weather or some celebrity couple that had been outed. This…this was about homosexuality-something that in this country was considered wrong and immoral on so many levels. He just shared this with his best friend when he hadn’t even known Youngjae’s own opinion on it. For all he knew, he could have just alienated his best friend…which would hurt more than he would probably ever be able to admit.

Youngjae looked to Daehyun for a long while. He considered all that he had just been told. Of course, it was very biased based on what he had been told because he has no idea who Seungchul or Jiyong are, but from what his best friend told him…he could see himself approving of their relationship-gender be damned.

Besides, he highly doubted that homosexual relationships were all that rare to begin with.

“I agree with you.”

They both lay on their backs once again. Relief had flooded Daehyun and he felt so much closer to his best friend and couldn’t even place why that was. But it was nice.

Silence then took over the rest of their night together.
