Metal is a "coat of many colors," so to speak. So to clear the cloudiness of the thing, I've defined(or tried my hardest to define) a few of the genres. I really don't know shit about Metal when you compare me to most, so, please feel free to correct me.

You're right about prog metal for the most part, but I like to call prog metal "brain metal" on some occations. You wont find any idiots behind the instrament in a prog metal band, because its extreamly hard to play. Its called progressive metal cause there is progressive timing changes thoughout the songs, also called runs. Its alternates(this is an example) 9/8, 11/8 measures, 7/8, 4/4 measure in there. And those 9/8 to 11/8 measures useully arnt chords.. Good call on most of your other definitions though...

But you forgot a few genres! Hair Metal and Shred-Metal. Shred Metal is the wild card I suppose. Van Halen put this type on the map, and Randy Rhaods perfected it IMO. Shred is often confused with hair metal, few can tell the difference, im sure you can tell though..

BTW, a few bands I like that combine speed/death/black/prog metal are Dillenger Escape Plan and Mushuggah..
