in which es rambles about her relationship with merlin atm:

So if you've been with me in fandom for any amount of time, you'll probably know I love Gwen and Morgana the hardest, solo and as a ship. That will always be true.

But with s3 I began to realise -- especially while doing a regular podcast with kepp0xy and crayford -- the show wasn't going to be the story I wanted. The things I was invested in were not what the ( Read more... )

tl;dr: dw gives me the feelings and merl, merlin

Merlin S4 confuses me slightly, because it's so obviously about twelve times better than it's ever been before, at the same time it's now a show entirely devoted to boys and their feelings which with the best will in the world is not something I'll ever have much fannish or emotional investment in. So. Yes. Watching it as a pretty bit of telly - and it's nice to be able to do that without being angry at it for not being what I wanted it to be - and hoping the BBC will eventually make me a show about pretty medieval girls and thier feelings.

Um. Basically what you said. Yes.

It's a little odd, watching a show primarily for its subtextual boy!relationship. I feel 15 all over again. :/

That's what's so frustrating: it's got better. In so many ways! It's just, we've got into different things.

But it's fine, I can be into what it's into -- I'd be lying if I said I didn't start the show being distracted the boys. It's almost full circle.

Did you like yesterday's ep, in the end?

=( I'm sorry! It's always frustrating/heartbreaking when this happens, and considering what brilliant ideas and insights you had for these two characters and their relationship I'm especially sorry the Merlin writers have failed you. I'm glad you're still enjoying S4, but blegh. =\

Aw, thank you! It's not even that sad or anything cus we're not breaking up! ...it's just this general feeling I've had that I'm finally able to articulate. And I still do find various things vastly enjoyable! Just, a lot of the squee's got dimmed :P

I suspect next week's episode will be a sausage fest and hence my level of interest will certainly dip for that one. I like the boys, I'm just no where near as invested in them.

but but, it's all been relatively boysy since the season recommenced. After Morgana opened the veil in the premiere, she's been a scowling afterthought; Gwen just about elbowed herself into the subplot of the second one.

all I know is, if next week's ep doesn't have Merlin go all Daenerys with the dragon egg, I'm going to be well disappointed.

Hey at least the girls where actually in those ones and had lines and stuff! I suspect they'll be off washing their hair or some such during next week's ep (I vote for having a angsty lesbian tryst but I'd always vote for that so...)

all I know is, if next week's ep doesn't have Merlin go all Daenerys with the dragon egg, I'm going to be well disappointed.

He's going to get naked and sooty and place one of them conveniently so they don't have to put it on after the watershed?

Yeah, I think I agree with you on being sort of shocked when something happens that pleases me, and for the rest of it just being totally entertained by the utter ridiculousness and crack of the show. It's funny, because some of the aspects that I was invested in, such as the ~romance~, I think was handled okay in S3 and I was more or less fine with it, but I want so much more for Gwen (and Morgana), and that, just...doesn't seem like it's gonna happen.

exactly, I always enjoyed the romance of Arthur/Gwen. And it was one of the things done well in s3, I genuinely felt the writers had realised how to make it work.

But now it just happens every now and then and I'm left going "...so that was unexciting." I feel like I'm just waiting for them to get married and sign their documents and it'll all be dandy and continue as before and nothing much will change in their relationship. Except the location of Gwen's bedroom.

makes me rather hope lancelot will be a big more-than-one-ep spanner when he returns. :P
