I can mostly recommend places to eat. :) It looks like a hole in the wall, but Country Flame has good cheap Mexican food. I enjoyed brunch at Cafe Amelie, dinner at Mimi's, breakfast at Huey's. 2006 trip diary.
Look at Chuck Taggart's blog. He's a New Orleans ex-pat that goes back a bit and writes about the food and bar scene. A big cocktail geek (one of his cocktails, the Hoskins, was on the menu at Eastern Standard for a long while).

Also ask DJ Shivar, she's from there and used to run a bunch of the awesome at teh clubs in the area.
