I'm reading "The Sun Also Rises" by Ernest Hemingway right now, and in the first 60 pages it seems to be a bit depressing. Similar (so far) in spirit to F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby," it talks about the trevails of the rich and upper-crust, and their fairly empty lives. I have heard people on both sides of "Arms," but I read it this past summer and thought it was really a great book. It is a bit slow at times (well, a lot of times) but the prose has a really lyrical style, and I enjoyed it. But I would advise you to stick with it, since the ending is what makes the book, in my opinion. In its simple elegance, I thought "A Farewell to Arms" rivals "The Old Man and the Sea" but with a more complex story.

Still, there's nothing worse than forcing yourself to read something you hate, so try something else if it isn't that great for you, although you may want to stick this one out, I thought it was worth it.
