Just finished my first "END OF SEMESTER DUMPSTER DIVIN" adventure! It is unbelievable what some of these kids throw away. On one hand, you're all "omg free stuff" but on the other hand, you're all "selfish, lazy bastards could've taken this shit to Goodwill ( Read more... )

I would never! Unless they were stained. Most of the clothes were not stained. The shoes are worn but not WELL worn, except for a couple of scuffed sandals. I walked away with two pairs of NICE sneakers, three pairs of sandals and a pair of IU (my school) slippers. And that still left Missy with four pairs of sneakers and four pairs of sandals!

It's really good for Missy though, because most of her clothes and shoes are still on the other side of the country with her ex-husband. She only had two pairs of shoes!

Maybe they knew we'd be out there, lol! I guess a lot of people do go dumpster diving when the students move out.

i wouldn't pick up clothes and some other things around here due to the bedbug problems, but it's horrible how much people throw out that's not even been used.

i'm no recycling fanatic, but tossing stuff that could be reused is just pointless to me. heck, i'm about to go through my wardrobe for a spring clean and sort out all the jeans that no longer fit me to go to charity. might as well let someone else get a chance to wear them, half of them came from a second-hand shop in the first place!

Yeah, I was definitely cognizant of the bedbug threat. I looked over everything I got and it seems immaculate. Hopefully Missy did the same with all the clothes she got. You learn a lot about people when you go through their trash :P Two of our biggest "benefactors" was a nurse who probably got a job somewhere else and just dumped most of her stuff to start over. The other was a Japanese girl who likely went back home after graduating and didn't need all the stuff she'd accumulated.

I always try to donate anything I want to discard if it's usable. I'm more aware of recycling as well, now that I live somewhere with bins right in the parking lot. It's really not that much extra time or effort to avoid being wasteful.

one of my sisters used to go grab food from a local supermarket as they'd throw away tinned goods that were still months from their use-by dates. i know you're not supposed to do that, but it's such a waste from the supermarket! (especially as my local supermarket when i was at uni would happily sell stuff that'd gone moldy. you'd really have to closely inspect the discounted stuff. but still, a whole loaf of bread for 10p? i miss that!)

i can see you making up little stories of these people's lives in your head as you hunted through their discarded things. :p some people buy the wierdest of things. if you pick up clothes or blankets or anything, would suggest nuking them through a hot wash and tumble dry before using 'em.. although obviously you'd have done that any way coz of hygine etc etc *ramble*

i saw your other post, hope the pets like their new water fountain!
