An ordinary October day in the San Francisco Bay Area. The World Series is on tonight: Bay Bridge series, Giants vs. A's. It's Indian summer. Hot. REALLY hot. We're talking 94 degrees hot. A little unusual, but not enough to really concern anyone. My mom and I are shopping at T.J. Maxx, taking in the bargains, seeing what we can find for fall/ ( Read more... )

I've never been in an earthquake, but I share your fear of natural disasters after seeing some of the damage they've done...

I was three when that happened, and I was scared enough to not want to go to CA three years later when I had the opportunity. (I did, but still...) I can't imagine what it'd be like to actually be there when it happened.

Wonderfully written. I remember that quake -- I was in college at the time, and I had relatives in SF and I was terrified for them.

And when I went to SF the following May for an academic conference, I learned what an arse my uncle was... as we drove over the bridge from the airport and he told stories of the quake to my friend who we had WARNED him was already phobic about bridges. My uncle was cruel. I spent the rest of the trip waiting for the shakes to begin.

I can't imagine having been there during it, but your post makes me think I know a bit more about how it might've felt. Good job.

That sounds terrifying and surreal. You hear about earthquakes all the time but I've never heard a personal account- it's always something lofty and third person. I would have been absolutely terrified for myself and my mother in your shoes- never felt safe after that. Once, a few years ago, my car caught on fire in a snowstorm. I got out and was fine but the car completely burned away. Irrationally, because I was never in any danger, it shook me deeply, watching the frame burn in the night during the night with snow and smoke all around.
