books?

I'm almost done reading my book (The Dome by Stephen King.) Can anyone recommend a new one? I'm not into heavy Scifi or fantasy (shocking, I know) but there are occasional exceptions to that rule.

Suggest away!

For some reason, I'm on a historical bent in coming up with recommendations. *shrug* verymelm August 2 2010, 21:32:57 UTC
You might (or might not) like The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber or The Somnambulist or The Dress Lodger (Wikipedia doesn't have a page - it's England during the cholera epidemic of 1831. They all had a sort of similar vibe to me because they're all Victorian-era settings, but they are all pretty different in topic.

Oh, and if you can get through the first scene, The Dante Club was interesting and the author has written a couple more in that same vein - The Poe Shadow (which I've read and was also intrigued by) and The Last Dickens. They're sort of murder-mysteries set in the 19th century for the most part.

What do you define as "heavy" SF or fantasy?

I don't generally care for the fairies-elves-and-dragons on an epic quest sort of fantasy. (obvious exceptions to this are LOTR and The Last Unicorn) Robert Jordan is probably the best example I can give on that. SF is a little more hit or miss.

I am quite taken with PD James at the moment.

If you like murder-mystery stories at all, I'm getting a kick out of The Cat Who... series by Lillian Jackson Braun. There's a whole bunch of them, none of them seem to be especially long or complicated. The Cat Who Could Read Backwards is the first one, which I haven't finished yet (the library catalog was not an effective way to find out which one was written first), but so far I'm enjoying it.

love it. I'm almost done and am very curious to see how it ends. (and what the deal with the aliens is) There are a lot of little things about it that remind me of The Stand.

However, isn't it possible for one person to hit another without blood gushing? but he's been like that since Carrie.
