I hear you on the shootings. I didn't know anyone at that shooting, but two of my friends were killed in March '06 in Seattle. 7 people died (including the shooter), and it barely made the headlines outside of Seattle. Their deaths hit me pretty hard. You might look around online as I'm sure there are loads of survivor-support groups - it really helped me to be able to talk to others who had been directly affected. In the meantime, one of my friends who I met in the aftermath of the Seattle shooting taught me this one as something I can give you from a long distance: **bigHUGEhug*
btw - i'll be in the 'ville 31 July through 10 August.
i am happy to know about the mint julep. you get two smiley face stickers, and TWO red stars for going above and beyond the call of duty and drinking TWO! ;)
i'm really excited for my visit this summer - my first extended visit since 2003.
I sometimes think that the media coverage after 9/11 has truly desensitized us as a nation, yes. You know, studies show that people can only take so much innundation with horror before they just shut down emotionally. So, yeah, I do think that we as a nation have shut down in a lot of ways since 9/11. We don't have the stomach for violence, I don't think.
I can tell you, though, and VA Tech happened at the same time as a Bush scandal, or around the elections, there would've been a ton more coverage to distract from the political goings on. In fact, I thought it was interesting how the main media coverage took place at the same time as the Supreme Court's decision about partial birth abortion, pretty much effectively wiping that out of the media for several days.
I totally agree with you about the media and how they hype all the wrong things and the way our country has gotten so complacent. It constantly frustrates me and saddens me to realize just how selfish so many, many people are. I know a lot of wonderful people, but there are just way too many assholes in the world that aren't doing anything to make things better.
Our friend Andrew teaches at Virginia Tech, and I took the shootings to heart as well. The fact that the event was so shocking and so sad, coupled with the fact that it could have very easily been my good friend who was gunned down while he stood at the head of a classroom- still makes me shiver.

I'm so sorry about the Seattle shooting involving your friends. You're right. I don't remember even hearing about it in the news.
Also, I'm excited you're gonna make it the Louisville this summer. I didn't think you'd be around these here parts for quite a while longer.
