But fact checking and running errata don't get nearly as many click-throughs and advertising dollars as a good conspiracy.

Getting up the hopes of the faithful prompts more click-throughs than publishing real news, for sure. It's sort of like sliding in an Enquirer article.

LOVE this post! You said it - It's crazy-making how often we see this same lame song-and-dance from the media on Christian archeological hoaxes, Prayer Studies, you name it: Sensationalistic headline, followed by late (or never), hushed retraction...
