Jay & I participated in a Town Lake Trail cleanup a couple years ago. The worst trash we picked up was always right by/in the water. It was amazing how much there was, and it was disgusting.
I also saw a Downtown episode that featured a guy who works for the city or LCRA cleaning up Town Lake's trash. He uses this huuuuge machine that goes out on the water picking up the stuff. It's astounding how much he picks up. and he says the amount he picks up keeps growing every year.
I belong to the Surfrider Foundation that tries to do something about it, but I don't feel like I contribute nearly enough. At least I've gone and bought a fridge that has a water filter cutting my use of plastic bottles by a whole lot.
This evening after reading your article, I was thinking Texas should enact a bottle bill, like Oregon and a lot of states have. As a consumer you pay $.05 or $.10 a bottle which you don't get back until you recycle it.
and yet, plastic bottles are just a tiny part of the problem.
