I am really curious to see if they can tell you what the swelling is. My brother had that happening randomly for about 2 years before he died. It seemed to spread on him and take up more of his face each time it happened, but always his upper lip and up from there.
I am certain the two were not related. My brother had 4 forms of cancer and cirrhosis of the liver. He has only been gone about 3 months. Still kinda hard to believe.
I'm sorry you're having to deal with this. *hugs and sympathy*
Re: sour laundry. You might consider adding Borax to your wash loads. It has no odor. I used to use it on my ex's incredibly whiffy flight suits. It was the only way to make them stop reeking. Another suggestion is to add white vinegar to your rinse cycle - again, not particularly odiferous, nor likely to cause irritation. Good luck finding your allergen/irritant, and with your washing.
Black silk would be more likely, yeah...but most of what I have are shades of gray, blue, purple, and a lovely deep wine red. Oh, and snowflakes, but those are flannel sheets.
I thought about that (and your "studs" comment makes me giggle, because I'm thinking of both defintions of "stud"...heehee...) but I'd actually probably sweat to death on them. True leather is expensive, and faux leather is a synthetic. I sweat on synthetics. 100% cotton sheets, and feather pillows.
So sorry you're poorly. Maybe it's hives... I had that from detergent once. They run the course on your face, behind your knees, on your stomach. Very itchy, but they go away. Pray it's not bedbugs. If it is, you MUST get an exterminator in there early. Hit them early and hard. My friend has them. Once you have them, you can't ever get rid of them. They will make your life hell.
No bloodspots whatsoever on the sheets, absolutely no bugbites on me (and my skin is fair enough, the slightest pinprick shows up pink/red).
I think I've found the culprit, something which would affect both my face AND my fingers: the cinnamomum verum I was taking to control my blood sugar. I didn't take it while in Texas, and took it sporadically when I came back. (I was taking decaffeinated coffee bean extract instead, as I have discovered the fortuitous side-effect that the cbe moderates my periods from heavy & crampy to bearably light on both flow & pain.)
They come in assembled capsules, not fully coated capsules, so the hand would've been affected by powder...and being gone 10 days might've been just long enough for my body to hyper-react to it when I got back and took a few; sporadic after that first returned dose wouldn't have helped, either.
Dunno for 100% sure, but I've avoided taking it since, and have had no symptoms. *shrug* We'll see, I guess.
I'm so glad you've found the culprit and it's not bedbugs. You would know for sure if they bit you... very itchy and visible for three weeks. Just awful. I would not wish them on anybody.

I'm glad you're going to the doctor; hopefully s/he will get it sorted.
