No, you can't help the numb, it comes and goes of its own volition and doesn't make you a heartless bitch. It is an entity unto itself that you shouldn't judge yourself by.

I'll be honest. It's not the numb I hate. It's the knowledge that the numb will abruptly vanish at some point, and I will be a shrieking, crying wreck at what will typically be the worst possible moment. I can't schedule it, I don't know when it will come. It hasn't, yet. But it will. And I hate it.

When there's something that hurts so deeply, and we feel it so acutely, the only way to handle it is in pieces at a time. That's why numbness comes, so we can make it through, a step at a time.
