18. Pool side
Things were getting easier between Arthur and Merlin since the night on the roof.
They were spending more time together and only bickering half of the time; the other half, they just bantered good-naturedly, which made things remarkable more enjoyable when the two families met for dinner every week.
This Wednesday, Merlin and Arthur were lazily stretched by the pool side in the club while Morgana was playing around with a couple of new friends she just made.
It’s was pretty new to Merlin to hang around in the club pool without worrying about drowning people so she was enjoying herself immensely; soaking up the sun in a blue bikini and sunglasses, listening to the Paramore (she was in a good mood today, lighter music was in order)on her cell phone mp3 player.
“You don’t work here at the week?”
Arthur asks, glancing sideways. Her eyes are close so he takes his time checking her out. (She might be a pain in the arse, but she is pretty.)
“Nops.” She answers without opening her eyes. “I only work here at the weekends. Monday, Wednesday and Fridays I work at Avalon’s bookstore from 9 to 5 and Tuesdays and Thursdays I work at Sam’s diner as a waitress. I had the day off today.”
“That’s a lot of temp jobs.”
“Girl needs money.” Merlin says, glancing back at him and shrugging. “Mom has a rough enough time worrying about bills and stuff; I don’t want her to worry about allowance too.”
“Yeah, but surely only one job would be enough.” Arthur probes carefully.
“Gotta think about college.” Merlin shrugs again, but there is a lingering tension on her shoulders. “I have a good chance to get the Drake Association’s scholarship, but if I don’t…”
“Backup plan.” Arthur completes and Merlin nods.
It is still slightly surprising to Arthur how much responsibilities Merlin carries on her own just to help her mother. When he met the girl, he just assumed she didn’t have a care in the word.
Merlin pulls out her ear buds and takes off her sunglasses.
“I’m going for a dive. Hold this?” She throws her phone on Arthur’s chest and just jumps into the pool.
