Masterlist 74. Wobbly Knees
Arthur waits two days before he goes over Merlin’s to see how she’s doing.
Arriving in her room, he finds the girl sitting cross-legged on the floor, surrounded by books, chewing on the cap of her pen.
“Hey.” Arthur says from his spot by the door, drawing her attention to him.
“Oh, hi.” Merlin smiles at him distracted and turn her eyes back to the book, frowning.
Arthur crosses the room and sits on her bed, waving the gift-wrapped record under her nose. Merlin looks at him, then at the disk before sighing.
“I wish you’d stop buying me things.” She complains. “It makes me think you think I’m shallow.”
Arthur shakes his head with a warm smile.
“That’s not my logic.” Merlin looks at him confused.
“What is it then?”
Arthur’s smile widen as he takes Archie from its place by Merlin’s pillow.
“Every time you look at something I gave you, you remember me, am I correct?”
Merlin hesitates for a second, feeling a warmth rising on the back of her neck, before nodding.
“That’s what I’m aiming for. For you to think about me constantly.”
Merlin considers telling Arthur that she doesn’t really need that kind of incentive, because honestly, the blonde doesn’t leave her head, but her room wouldn’t be big enough for her ego if she did, so Merlin remains silent.
And the fact that Arthur had slid from her bed and was now sitting next to her on the floor, ignoring all concepts of personal space does nothing to help her eloquence either.
“What’s all this?” He asks, nodding towards her books. Merlin grimaces.
“I have a geometry quiz tomorrow and I’m terrible at it.” Arthur smiles.
“Maybe you just need a tutor.”
He knows right away he had said the wrong thing when Merlin’s face clouds with something akin to pain and regret.
“He used to help you if this, didn’t he?” Arthur refrains from saying his name and by the way Merlin relaxes a little as she nods proves him it was a smart choice. “He’s still not talking to you?”
“No.” Merlin murmurs quietly, sadly. “He isn’t even acknowledging me in school. Gwen is doing what she can, but Will is just too stubborn.”
“He’ll come around eventually.” Arthur says with certainty that makes Merlin look at him surprised. “If he likes you as much as he claims to do, if he likes you like I do, he’ll take any excuse to be close to you.”
Merlin gapes at Arthur, feeling her cheeks flush and her knees wobble. She’s out of words. Sometimes Arthur surprises her. Apparently, he surprises himself too, because he’s looking away, flushing.
“When you talk like that…” She starts with in a low tone, murmuring more to herself than anything. “Makes me forget why I’m not with you.”
Arthur looks at her again, brushing the side of her face with the back of his hand.
“Maybe you should.” He whispers, inching closer.
Merlin licks her lips nervously, watching how Arthur’s gaze follows the path of her tongue. She shivers lightly, wishing for him to just hurry up and kiss her already.
“Merlin, I…” Susan busts into Merlin’s room without knocking, breaking the spell. She trails off glancing from Arthur to her daughter, noticing how they had jumped apart when she walked in. She grins. “Sorry; didn’t mean to interrupt.”
“No…” Arthur clears his throat, standing up. “I was leaving, actually.”
He sends Merlin one last glance with longing and regret, before passing by Susan to exit the room.
