77. I Love You
After the movie, Merlin drags Arthur back to the car while Morgana and Gawain wait for his parents, just outside the theater. Arthur is still glaring at the boy holding his baby sister’s hand.
“She really likes him.” Merlin says, trying to ease some of the tension off Arthur.
“Yeah, I know.” He says in a sigh, taking his eyes off the young couple for the first time. “It’s just, feels like… I don’t know… that I’m loosing my sister.”
“Arthur…” She looks at him worried, but he cuts her off.
“I missed her growing up. After mum died, I was so caught up in my own problems that I missed when Morgana went from ‘The only males I like are my brother and father’ to ‘my brother and father are the only males I DON’T like’ I’m a terrible brother.”
“You’re a good brother and Morgana loves you.” Merlin reassures. “Maybe you miss some of her life, but you can make up for it now.”
Arthur looks up to her and nods with a small smile in his lips.
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.” Merlin answers grinning and turns to check if Gawain’s parents had arrived.
“I love you.” Arthur blurts out suddenly and Merlin’s neck snaps when she turns to look at him in shock.
“I love you.” He repeats with determination. “I don’t use these words lightly, Merlin and I’ve never said it to a girl before, but I’m saying to you because it’s so overwhelming the way I feel about you.” Arthur pauses, taking a breath. “I don’t even think love covers it. It’s like, I don’t know, like I felt this all the time, but only realized what it was after you’re walked into my life. And I know it’s probably a lot to take… to hear, especially when you’re doing your best to not feel the same about me, but…”
Arthur is cut off when Merlin suddenly kisses him like the end of the world is just around the corner: desperate and passionate.
When they break apart for breath, she looks at him in awe, as if she had found something she was missing.
Arthur doesn’t have time to ask about it though, Morgana is knocking on the window of the car, looking partially amused, partially disgusted. He unlocks the car, eyes returning to Merlin, searching; confused. She just smiles, squeezing one of his hands.
Maybe he shouldn’t try to understand just yet. Maybe Arthur should just enjoy the fact that he finally, finally had Merlin.
