Masterlist 79. Cold Shower
Susan is struggling with the pipes under the kitchen sink when a loud shriek reaches her ears. She rushes over to the upstairs floor, busting into the bathroom from where the scream had been originated.
“Merlin! Are you alright?” She asks, concerned touching her voice.
Merlin pushes the shower curtain aside and steps out if the tub. She has a towel wrapped around herself, but she’s shaking badly and her teeth are chattering loudly.
“I’m fine.” She shivers. “Wasn’t expecting the cold shower.”
Susan smiles in sympathy, offering a bath robe for more warmth.
“I forgot to tell you, we have no hot water. Something’s wrong with the heater.”
“Great.” Merlin hisses through clench teeth. “When will we get it fix it?”
“I don’t know. The plumbing in the kitchen isn’t working properly; last autumn’s winds messed up the roof and unless we planning on recreate Titanic, it needs to be fixed before spring. And don’t let me get started on the attic. The entire thing is all moldy, if I don’t do something, it might spread. Damn old houses! I’m going to have to ask for a loan to deal with all this.”
Merlin watches as Susan sighs frustrated and tired, the weight of the latest problems heavy on her shoulders. Ever since her father left, her mother had to work overtime to make sure everything ran smoothly in the house. Merlin never complained, she always had everything she needed, but she knew it was hard on her mother.
“Maybe you shouldn’t have it fixed.” Susan looks at her daughter with a frown of confusion. “Maybe we should just look for new place.”
“You want to move out?” She is stunned at Merlin’s suggestion. “I thought you loved this house.”
“You know I do, mom. It’s the house I grew up in.” Merlin says in a sigh. “But I can’t help but notice that is getting expensive to maintain it and besides, I’ll be moving out anyway after next summer because of college…”
“There is that.” Susan concedes, leaning against the sink top, thoughtful. “This house would feel huge without you here.”
“We could find a smaller place, closer to the hospital…” Merlin suggests, taking a seat on the toilet.
“Maybe… I think about it.” Her mother says, moving to the door.
“Mom?” Merlin calls hesitant. Susan turns to look at her questioningly. “Can I…?” She trails off, looking expectant.
“Can you heat the water in your very special way?” She completes with an amused smile and Merlin nods. “Sure, go ahead.
Merlin grins.
“Thanks!”
