Title: 93. Father (The Boy Next Door Series)

93. Father
They go to Sam’s Dinner to talk because Merlin needs a familiar place to feel comfortable. Arthur is waiting by the counter, his back turned to them, but Merlin knows he’s paying attention on every word; looking for a sign of distress from her part. She is thankful for that.
She looks up from her cup, at her father. Joseph Sanders hadn’t changed much. He looks just like he did when he left 10 years ago, only now he has a few new wrinkles and his hair is a little grayer.
Merlin feels a mix of ambiguous feelings towards the man. She glad to see him again; glad that he’s not dead, but at the same time, she’s hurt and angry he left her. She has no idea what to do first.
“Your boyfriend is very protective.” Joseph comments as a way to start a conversation while carefully glancing at Arthur. “He really cares for you.”
“Why did you come back?” Merlin blurts out, anger tainting her voice.
“Well, I wanted to see you.” Joseph smiles. “My little girl is so big now.”
“Why now?” She ignores his words and the pang in her chest, focusing on the anger. Her father sighs resigned.
“My lawyer told me your mother is putting the house for sale. You’re moving in with her new boyfriend and I wanted to see if he’s a suitable stepfather for my little girl.”
“One:” Merlin starts. “Andrew is not trying to be a substitute father for me. I don’t need one now. I have Gaius. He’s the best father figure I could hope for; even when he’s away. Two: mom decided to move out because the house is falling apart and I agreed with her. Three, and more importantly: none of this is your business. You left us, you don’t have the right to come back and meddle on our lives. We don’t need you. Not anymore!”
Merlin pushes the chair away, breathing heavily after her angry speech and looking hurt.
“Leave again! But before you go, do one good thing for mom. Give her the divorce.” Merlin stands up and walks away without looking back.
Outside, she holds herself feeling the pain bubbling in her chest and tears prickling in her eyes.
Only a few seconds later, the bell on the door of the dinner clangs and a pair of strong arms wrap around her waist as Arthur kisses the top of her head.
“Are you alright?”
“No.” Merlin sighs, turning around and burying her face on Arthur’s chest.
