They had spend the entire day bringing boxes from Merlin’s house to Arthur’s, now they are enjoying a well deserved rest, lying on his bedroom (with the door wide open as the rules commanded.).
“How are things with your mum?” Arthur asks carefully. It is a dangerous subject to talk about with Merlin.
“I don’t want to talk about it.” Merlin answers shortly, tensing in anger.
“Alright; sorry.” He sighs, resigned. She sighs too.
“No, I’m sorry. It’s not your fault.” Merlin apologizes, looking up.
“I understand, don’t worry.” Arthur smiles, kissing the top of her head. “But you’re going to have to talk to her sometime. She’s your mother. I know what she did was awful, but she thought it was the right thing to do then.”
“Can we please talk about something else?” Merlin pleads, not wanting to be angry with her boyfriend; not when things were so well between them.
“Of course.” Arthur concedes and reaches over his bedside table to retrieve a wrapped box. “Happy Valentine’s Day.”
“Oh…” Merlin looks at the gift, then up to Arthur. “I forgot Arthur, I’m sorry, I didn’t get you anything.”
“Don’t worry, Merlin.” He smiles. “It’s just silly present. Something to cheer you up.”
“I’m a terrible girlfriend.” She sighs dejected.
“You’re an awesome girlfriend.” He declares, kissing her fully on the lips. “I don’t need presents.”
“Thank you for this.” Merlin says, kissing him again.
“You’re welcome.” Arthur grins and catches her lower lip between his. “It’s my pleasure.”
“I’ll get you something later.” She mumbles against his lips.
“You don’t have to.”
“Yes, I do.”
“No, you don’t.”
“Arthur…” Merlin says stern, pulling back. “I’m getting you something and that’s the end of discussion.”
“Fine.” He sighs, annoyed. “You really want to give me something?”
“Yes!”
“Make me a dragon.” Arthur smiles a little sheepishly. “Like the only you made in the magic show.”
Merlin looks at him surprised. Of all things, she wouldn’t expect him to ask her that. She looks deeply into his eyes and sees the expectation in his blue iris. How could she deny him anything?
With a flash of gold in her eyes, the dragon made of fire circles the room and Arthur grins.
“I don’t know how you do it.” He says with a voice full of wonder as he follows the dragon with his eyes.
“I’m magic.” Merlin blurts out suddenly, making him look down with a frown.
“You mean…”
“I mean I’m like a sorceress or something like that.” She cuts him off, nervously babbling. “I can do magic; it’s not tricks.”
Arthur stays silent for long moments and Merlin is starting to panic. Is he afraid of her?
“You blew up the telly that day, didn’t you?” He finally asks, looking at her again.
“Yeah, sorry about that. Sometimes, when I get angry or scared, it gets out of control.”
Arthur nods, looking back at his dragon again, thoughtful. The silence is back and is driving Merlin insane. She sighs dejected and starts to get away from him, but Arthur’s arm tighten around her.
“Where are you going?” He asks, looking at her with a frown of confusion.
“Away from you.” Merlin whispers, not meeting his eyes.
“Why?” He watches her for long moments before realization finally hits him. “You think I’m afraid of you?”
“Aren’t you?” Merlin asks, looking up at him. Arthur smiles again and pulls her back in to his arms.
“Never, Merlin. Never.”
