104. Pink Elephant in the Corner
At Wednesday, Arthur received his own admission letter for Princeton and everyone held their breath to see if the topic would surface again, it didn’t. But by Saturday, Merlin couldn’t stand the situation any longer.
With an deep sigh, she turns the TV off and turns to look at Arthur with a frown.
“Are we really going to do this?”
“Do what?” Arthur asks in a light tone, but doesn’t meet Merlin’s eyes.
“Ignore the pink elephant in the corner.” She replies with a sigh and the blonde just shrugs.
“Don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Seriously, Arthur; when did ‘not talking about it’ ever worked with us?” Merlin asks annoyed, rolling her eyes.
“There’s nothing to talk about it, Merlin.” He finally relents, sitting up straighter. “I’m going to Princeton, you’re going to Oxford. End of discussion.”
“And what about us?” She asks carefully, almost afraid.
“I don’t know.” Arthur replies sincerely. “I don’t think I’m cut for the whole ‘long-distance relationship’ thing.”
“So you want us to break up?” The question is made in a small, fragile tone and this time, it’s Merlin who doesn’t meet Arthur’s eyes. “After everything, you want to break up?”
“I don’t see other alternative.” Arthur replies in the same tone, looking at his hands.
“Can’t we at least give it a try? We’ve been through a lot and got over it, maybe we manage this too.” Merlin suggests hopefully, glancing at him, but Arthur shakes his head.
“I don’t know, Merlin. It’s going to be really hard.”
“We’ve been through worst.” She protests firmly.
“I don’t think so. Give me an example.”
Merlin opens her mouth to reply, but freezes mid-way. She has thousands of answers for that request, but she can’t say any of them; not when Arthur doesn’t remember. So she just remains silent and looks away.
“I hate when you do that.” Arthur complains with a sigh.
“Do what?”
“Sometimes you act like you know something about us that I don’t and you never tell me what it is.” Merlin stares at him in shock. He noticed? “I wish you just tell me already.”
“I can’t.” She finally says, looking away guiltily.
“Why not? It’s about me too; I have the right to know.” Arthur protests, glaring at her.
“You wouldn’t understand. At least, not now.” Merlin turns to him, with a pleading look. “You’ll know eventually, but I can’t tell you now.”
“Whatever.” Arthur replies irritated, before turning to the TV. “Put the movie back on.”
“Arthur…” Merlin tries, but he cuts her off.
“Just put the movie back on, Merlin.” He doesn’t look at her; his shoulders are tense and his jaw is set.
“Okay.” Merlin sighs in defeat and turns the TV on again.
Now there are two pink elephants in the corner that should be ignored.
