Car rentals:

Have any of you had much experience with any car rentals (besides Zipcar) who could advise me on which services (i.e. Enterprise, Hertz, Budget, Avis, etc) to use/avoid? I'm looking for the most cost-effective way to rent a car for a long weekend (preferably picking up/dropping off in Allston, Cambridge or Boston). Any input or suggestions would be ( Read more... )

when i went to seattle in september, i used priceline. got a $12 a day rental with thrifty, iirc. you prepay with priceline, but it was totally worth it. (particularly in seattle where the taxes/fees are almost as much as the rental itself.)

so try them.

also, if you rent from a non-airport location, you avoid some of the airport/tourist fees. however, the local locations aren't open as much as the airport so you have to make sure your return time takes into consideration the closing time of that location. otherwise, if you're late & they're closed, you may incur an extra day's worth of charges.

other than that, i have no specific local recommendations.

when i was job hunting out in CA i always used enterprise and really liked their service. not sure what they're like out here.

Priceline is a good suggestion.

If I'm renting a car I normally go and plug the dates/requirements into all the company's websites that have locations I can use and see which one is cheaper. I've used Budget the last couple of times in the US and they've been fine.

At one of my old admin jobs I always used avis to rent cars for my boss and never had a problem with them.
