I'm very fond of my Scion tC; it's in your price range, and when I was comparing similar cars (Focus, Cobalt, Mazda 3) it had more and better features for the same amount of cash. Very fun to drive too, with a good-sized engine. The hatchback is nice too, I can get a lot inside easily, without wrangling with a tiny trunk lip. (The Cobalt's was pretty bad) I paid 18.4 for it with the only additional option being side-impact air bags; I think those are standard on the 2008's.

God, I sound like a commercial. Have fun looking!

I am looking at things more mid 20's so a bit out of your range. If only the new '08 Malibu's had been out long enough for you to be able to get a used one, otherwise they start closer to 22k. Really a Corolla may not be a bad choice. Good mileage, will last, starts around 17k.

Corollas are soooo boring tho!

Haven't seen the new Malibu much, looks like they overhauled it pretty strongly
