Hi all. I'm brand new to this wonderful book, and am currently about halfway through it in French (just finished Book VI). I was quite scared of it before I started - I read quite a lot of French but I'm definitely not fluent - but it's actually been a really enjoyable experience and I am loving it much more than I ever expected to. Yes, the book is wonderful in French! Mind, please remember that Esméralda is not remotely under-age in 15C (she could have married at 12). She's quite old enough to be running a household! (Which is why she strikes me as a bit backward…)
The Hugo museum sounds marvellous! Re: illustrations, I love Brion's drawings for the 1865 Hetzel edition (which is available in a modern paperback reprint by Hachette Jeunesse (1979)): he does some very nice drawings of Claude… ;-D

Shows how much I know about Paris, not even realizing Hugo's house we there...>_> I'm actually reading Les Miserables now. I absolutly adore it, as did I Notre Dame de Paris. I'm turning into quite the Hugo fangirl xD The french version of Notre Dame de Paris is in our library, but I'm too scared to try reading in French as of yet...
