District 9 director Neill Blomkamp did a TEDx talk about his aliens here. He said they didn't represent what "real" aliens would look like. That was not their purpose in the movie.

Yeah, I remember he said that in the director's commentary. It really doesn't detract from the fact that those aliens are so utterly believable I'd almost expect to see them if I went to South africa. But I guess it's the aspect of anthropomorphization if that's even a word. We look for things in the "other" to compare to ourselves, and it becomes archetypical and functions metaphorically. I don't think that detracts from the reality of the aliens either, or of one of the most basic concepts of science fiction, escapism - that is, that even though we know it's supposed to be a metaphor we can still immerse ourselves wholeheartedly in the story and suspend disbelief in so doing. The whole purpose of CG used in a realistic way should serve this way, but it's a plus when it can go even further, as they did in District 9. Peter Jackson's WETA and another CG house I cant remember did all the effects and in my book they're one of the best, if not THE best CG FX companies ( ... )

never saw Avatar yet, but District 9 was soooo good.
Btw, I am off facebook again because of my first exhusband. So I shall be on here. Sometimes. Love you. Got your voicemail tonight, I was at work, we have no reception unless we go upstairs and outside. Richards is below the Apollo Theatre.
