On this day in history... three days after the end of hostilities and Lee's surrender to Grant, the Army of Northern Virginia formally surrendered their arms. Selected to receive the surrender and oversee the ceremony was General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain and the First Division, Fifth Corps of the Army of the Potomac.
