this comment_fic prompt, and kind of ridiculously sappy.
Jim's first memory is of stars.
He can't be more than two or three, and his mother is holding him in her lap on the back porch. She squeezes him tightly, and points upwards at the sky. "Your daddy's up there," she whispers. "In the stars."
Jim looks upwards, but all he sees are spots of light. They're pretty, though, so he keeps looking.
"He can't be here, but he loves you very much," his mother continues. "And he's watching over you."
She sounds sad. Jim doesn't know why his daddy being in the stars makes her sad, but he wants to fix it. "I go find him," he says, still looking at the sky.
"No, Jimmy," she replies softly. "You can't find him."
Jim finally looks down at her. "Why?" he demands.
Her eyes are wet, but she ruffles his hair and smiles. "Because I'd miss you."
"Oh." That makes sense. Jim turns in her lap and wraps his arms around her neck. "Love you, Mommy."
"I love you, too, honey."

Decades later, when he’s grown up and flying among the stars himself, Jim looks out at the spots of light and wonders if his father would be proud.
