I stopped at Ralphs and bought some food on my way home from work Tuesday morning. When I arrived home after stopping, I made a car insurance payment over the phone. Both were charged to my only credit card

A few years ago My CC number was stolen. How do I know? Because my number had been used to charge over $300 one day, and over $1,000 the next day. At a bakery. In Canada. Oh, and $2.?? at a Quizno's nearby. Needless to say, it wasnt me.

It is relatively easy to steal someone's info. The one no one over thinks of? Someone at the card company remembered your info, wrote it down for later and sent themselves your card. Or a place you've been to in the last week had a recording device on their credit card swiping machine. You would know if it was there by the flashing red light. Then they make themselves a card with your info on it.
Either way, the wonderful world of credit has insurance to cover those purchases.

Actually, no. There is a covert team of people who watch any unusual activity with bank employees. I have a friend who works in that department now. Any excessive hits on someone's account, or searches by name when there isn't a customer on the phone, address changes, all have to be done through the system and then processed by yet another team. No one is allowed to write anything down or take notes with them off of the floor. Banks take pride in their security system against employee theft. However, it still happens. Moreso with credit cards than deposit accounts.
Did you know they keep a list of fake address or addresses used for fraudulent accounts? If you happen to move into an apartment where someone did credit card fraud you probably won't be able to get an account at most major companies. It sucks but that's how the banks work.
Surprised this wasn't mentioned last night, so much to talk about so little time. :) As for the credit card, as you know i had the same thing happen to me, mine was a variation of course to what had happened to you, as it was a thief i knew, but the company took care of everything for me and made it as easy as possible. I am really glad to hear that they caught the transactions and called you before it got completely out of hand. :)
Sorry to hear of the scare - and kudos to your company for catching the charges! I was so erratic with my charging - one here 5 there, nothing for a long time then WHAM a whole bunch! And they never called me. Good think I looked over my charges regularly too - never can be too careful these days...
Sorry I wasn't / am not seeing you in Detroit - I would have really enjoyed that reunion! I am back in Shanghai - as you may have noticed already. Going through another fiasco, poetically? documented on here already.

I'm adding this to my list of reasons why I don't want a credit card.
