The Globalist has an opinion article in three parts this week (Part 1, Part 2 Part 3) about US foreign policy entitled Diplomacy and Empire by Chas W. Freeman, former U. S. Good article. I think the most disturbing thing is the shortsightedness of own vision. For the entire Bush adminstration, we've acted without thinking of the consequences of our actions. This entire Iraq mess wouldn't have happened if the President and his cabinet hadn't tried to push through the war without looking at the contingencies or thinking about reconstruction. If we had acted in the same way after WW2, we might still be dealing with an insurgency in Germany or Japan.

But there are other things that disturb me also, like the complete venality and stupidity that this government has displayed in dealing with hurricane Katrina, or the latest news of the administration firing all the attorney generals that they appointed, and replacing them with political appointees close to the president. I mean, how are we going to get anywhere if our government is this completely corrupt?

By the way, would you want him to learn Mandarin or Hindi?

If he spoke Hindi or better Mandarin than me, we would be even more world-compatible as a couple. That would be great. But I'd have to better my Mandarin and learn Hindi from scratch too, of course ( ... )
