This is not an update.

It's a question.

If an airplane flies, why doesn't a submarine swim?

Good one. In Dutch a submarine does the same as a ship, it sails. Weather or not it has sails.
Basically, why does an airplane do the same thing as a bird, and why isn't the motion of a submarine referred to as "swimming"?

Well I mean I dunno, maybe it is referred to as "swimming"? That's why I asked what submarines do. :)

Although I can't think of a better word than "fly" to describe what a submarine does.

The word "Submarine" means Under Water - taken from the German "Unterseeboot" under sea boat.
