I've been climbing for a couple of months now, and it's super addictive! I started out going once or twice a week, and am now consistently climbing three times a week while looking for excuses to hit the gym a fourth time...
The single most useful thing I've been taught is to find my feet first, and then worry about my hands - it's tough, since you typically look up as you climb, but I've started to get in the habit of picking out my next hand-hold and getting my feet up before I actually reach for it and it makes climbing way easier.
Yeah, if the gym were closer I would probably be sure I'd go more frequently. We'll see how it goes since it's probably an hour or so there and back if we go via public transit. Mostly I just want to make sure I get enough people going to make it worthwhile.
I think girls have an easier time learning the feet first thing. There is ZERO I can do with my arms, so all they're there for is balance. I was pleasantly surprised by making it to the top of the wall several times yesterday, but I've yet to follow a route. Oh well, I'm not in it for the challenge.
Good for you for trying out climbing! I was forced to do it when I was younger with my family and loved the challenge of grappling up a vertical wall, but absolutely hated having to come back down. Nerve-wrecking!
