and the arts have paled in comparison to the past.
I hadn't thought of it this way (though the arts have certainly paled!), but the desire to be famous seems to drive people more than the desire to do that artistic thing they must do because it's the center of their being.

People with no drive except fame often aren't very talented to begin with, and then don't develop any skills they do have because... why bother? They're already at the top.

Actual talent makes a huge difference. And your list is filled with a lot of talented people whom we will miss a great deal.

My cousin and I held a mini Bowie-festival today. Big Cuz is ten years older than myself, so he actually knew who I was talking about (Bowie isn't that big here... oops?) and showed me some youtube videos because, seriously, I never paid much attention to Bowie's musical career. It shocked me to know how many of his songs I did know and love!

So, yeah... talent that cannot be recovered. That's a void in the world indeed.
