Let me begin at the beginning. Every living thing, no matter what kind of life it is, is born of Magic. Whether or not they can use it, or even sense it is another story, but there is a certain amount of power in simply living. As life goes on, each creature will shed the power their life is made of, and at death it will be gone.
I wish I could help ... my magic is centered around the spheres of Fire. Sensing stuff like that is entirely out of my realm of expertise; I couldn't even do that if I learned.
I would ask if there are any priests around ... I remember there used to be a Shaman. He could still cast his magic, but I never asked him if there were any spirits he could converse with.
Difficulty? Yes, most definitely. Things that I used to be able to do consistantly feel ... somehow tiring. It's as if my fire center isn't creating enough mana on its own ... You see, in my world, people gather elemental energy from the world around them; mages learn to gather more and how to channel it to things other than basic functions.
I'm a sorcerer though, my fire center is overactive, and it makes fire energy of its own. It seems ... very dampened here.
It's complicated. We ... They didn't always have a choice. This guy wasn't even too bad until they drove him crazy. But now? I'd kill him if I saw him, just to... I'm sure he'd kill himself if he could.
But yeah. That's mostly what he does... uses it as a weapon.
[It's one of those cliche platitudes, but Vanyel's made the choice to die rather than live more than enough times- and for just such principles as this.
If he'd done otherwise, he would be neither a Herald, nor himself.]
Blood magic will eventually drive everyone who uses it into desperation or madness- assuming someone with sense doesn't show up to kill them first. It's the kind of taint that stays on its users decades after the fact.

It's magic. There should be more of it here, and there isn't, which is concerning.

Okay, so you've got a power... magic, that lets you tap and focus people's energy. Or wherever they're putting that energy?
Knew a guy who could do that. Kinda. Doubt you'd get along with him.
