Back with his team, in his office, the comforting weight of his Vortex Manipulator safely returned from Martha’s wrist to his own, Jack ensures that its time-travelling capability is in fact the only thing the Doctor disabled.
The scanning and monitoring functions are working. He can still hack into high level computer systems without being noticed. One hundred and seventy five years’ worth of family, friends and lovers are still accessible. Checking the hologram function, the Chula ambulance’s still there, but he discovers there’s a second file, “Hope.”
Hope.
Martha’s codename, the year she’d walked the Earth, to tell her story.
“What did you create, sweetheart?” Jack asks out loud, displaying it.
He gets the Earth, saying, “Help me, Martha Jones. You’re my only hope.”
“Oh, honey,” Jack breathes, halfway between laughing and crying, “you beautiful, clever girl.”
He only hopes that kept the nightmares away.
Martha saved the world, practically single-handedly. She was thrown in at the deep end, turned into a soldier.
When she gets her degree, accepts his job offer, and arrives in Cardiff, he’s buying her champagne and taking her straight to a huge bed in an incredibly expensive hotel. It’s not like Torchwood can’t afford it, for heaven’s sake.
It’s the very least he can do, to begin repaying the enormous debt he owes her.
