Sweet Child Of Mine
by Laura

His ship goes haywire.

As he and the Doctor try to work out just why Emma’s screaming so loudly at them, out of the corner of his eye, Jack sees what resembles a faint fire, hanging in mid air: someone’s got a fully functional Vortex Manipulator.

He tries a few moves with his own, but it won’t tell him anything.

A teenage girl then shimmers into sight; all big, blue eyes and long, dark hair, and Jack gasps.

She’s his.

Well, kinda.

In some other time, in some other life, his precious little half-human daughter survived. “Emma?” he whispers. “Not you, sweetheart,” he addresses the ship, “this one.”

The girl nods, before asking, “Jack?”

“Yeah.”

“You’re not my Jack,” she says. “Where am I?”

The last sentence is high pitched, and she begins to change appearance, seemingly involuntarily. “Sweetheart,” Jack says, gently taking her by the shoulders, and looking her in the eyes, “c’mon, calm down, hold onto your standard form and shape.”

“How did you know about that?” the girl asks suspiciously, when she’s calmer; her own eyes and hair back on her head.

“Same way I know your name. I’ve only a vague idea where you came from, but I know exactly what you are, Emma.” With that, Jack places a kiss on her forehead. “C’mon, Little Miss Shape-shifter, let me show my ship to you.”

“She got a name? Ships always need a name.” She slips her hand into his.

“Can I tell her, Doc?” Jack asks the Time Lord.

“Yes. No major impact on time lines,” the Doctor says.

“Thanks.” Jack smiles. “Well, Emma,” he addresses the girl, indicates the control room in general, “meet...Emma. She’s a TARDIS. My TARDIS, and she’s one of only two in existence, the Doctor’s is the other one.

“Why does your ship have my name, Jack?” she asks, in a tone that’s far too perceptive, as she tries to take it all in.

“Because she knows I lost you before I ever got to meet you, honey.”

She realises what he means, and her face falls, tears appear in her eys. Jack’s only choice is to pull (not) his daughter into his arms, press kisses into her hair. “Shh, shh. That’s only in this time line. Nothing’s changed in your own time. Okay?” She nods against his chest. Jack gently pushes her back, wipes her tears away with his fingers.

“Now, do you wanna tell me whose Vortex Manipulator you have strapped to your wrist?” he asks, smiling down at her, bringing her hand to his eyes. “It’s not mine. Well, his. Far too scratched.” He drops her wrist.

“Red military jacket,” she says. “He said I could borrow it, as long as I tried to get somewhere completely different. I just pressed randomise. I didn’t think I’d end up with another version of my Jack. That’s why I was so surprised.”

It would be him. “And a hell of a lot of guns to go with the jacket?”

“Yes.”

“Sword?”

“That, too.”

“Are he and your Jack lovers?”

The girl goes bright red. “No comment.”

But as fun as this is, she needs to go. Her presence may have damaged this time line. “I think it’s time you went home, Emma,” Jack says, reluctantly. “Just hit the reverse sequence.”

She then stands up on her toes, and softly presses her lips to his, in probably just the same way that she kisses her own Jack. “I’m sorry about your Emma,” she tells him, as she pulls away, and flips open the Vortex Manipulator. “Goodbye, all of you.” The sequence is entered, and she disappears.

Jack instantly feels the loss.

While his ship, his Emma caresses his mind, the Doctor simply holds Jack in his arms and lets him cry.
