Thanks For All The Fish

Torchwood’s newest acquisition was an alien musical toy, rather like sleighbells. For a few days, Jack let Toshiko work on her translation program, turning ultrasonic notes into audible ones, and play with the bells. In the meantime, he researched, made calls.

“Tell me, Toshiko,” Jack asked her, when she’d shown him her program and experiments, “There’s the bats, but what other animals hear ultrasonically?” They were sat together, at her workstation.
Her face lit up, instantly. “Dolphins, Jack. Well, dogs, too, of course, but dolphins are more interesting. There’s even research that says they’re self-aware, can recognise each others ‘name clicks’ -“
“Yeah, that’s right,” he said, cutting her off, but smiling. He reached into a trouser pocket, pulling out a couple of pieces of paper. “You wanna go and play the alien songs to the Cardigan Bay dolphins?” he asked, handing her the tickets for the boat. “Just you and me.”
“I’d love to!” Toshiko exclaimed, beaming at him. “Thank you, Jack.”
“You’re welcome. Now, write me a pretty tune, Toshiko.” Jack paused, grinning wickedly at her. “Been a while since I seduced something, or someone with hearing as good as theirs.”
“Jack!” she said, shaking her head.
He just grinned back, unrepentant, and rose from his chair.

The dolphins came to say hello, swimming very happily around the boat for a while, when Toshiko played an alien, and so very pretty tune to them. She smiled, and giggled.
She was happy, and Jack was pleased, both at her work, and, far more importantly, for her, his brilliant girl.
