All The Natural Wonders That Grow Around You
by Laura
There had long been the idea that animals with the ears to hear noises on the extreme ends of the sonic range also possessed some psychic abilities: dogs and their ultrasonic hearing could sense ghosts; elephants’ subsonic hearing helped them sense when other herds were approaching.
Right now, seeing them in the sea, swimming, jumping about, Jack knew for a fact that the dolphins were happy, that they liked the music. Yes, they were laughing, loudly click-click-clicking away, so Toshiko kept on smiling, as she watched the animals simply play.
He, though, with his own telepathic senses, felt their reactions in his head. “You’re welcome,” he said, as they thanked the two of them for the music.
Toshiko turned to him. “Jack?” she asked, sounding puzzled. “Who are you talking to?”
He realised he’d accidentally spoken out loud. Looking at the incredibly smart woman he’d taken on, in, under his wing, and considering her, Jack knew he could trust Toshiko with this. “Them,” he said, and nodded towards the dolphins. “They’re really happy; they were thanking us for their gift.”
“Jack, I can see that,” Toshiko replied, carefully, half-smiling.
“Ah, but I can sense it, feel it, in here.” He tapped a couple of fingers against his right temple. “Telepathy and empathy, Toshiko. I can understand what they can’t say.”
“Really?” she asked, smiling properly now. “Do they have anything nice to 'not say' about me, Captain?”
Taking it in her stride, then; not at all bothered. Good girl. Jack smiled back at Toshiko. “Oh, yeah, sweetheart. Plenty.” With that, they both turned back to the dolphins.
“You’re welcome,” Toshiko repeated. “I’m happy you like it.”
Jack placed an arm around her shoulders, pulled her close, and they both watched the animals swim, jump, play, for a little while longer.
