I've been on a weird documentary kick, but I've just started watching a four-episode cop show on Netflix, The Lava Field. It's Icelandic, and it appears they jammed every single crime drama thing they could possibly want to do in a whole season in these four episodes. I watched half yesterday and will watch the other half soon. It's interesting.

Ooh, that does sound interesting.

I've downloaded so many foreign language crime shows by now it's getting ridiculous and yet I don't feel I have enough.

Westworld! Even if you don't have cable you can watch it by subscribing to HBO Now (first month free).

I also enjoyed The OA, another of those strange slow-moving shows where it's all about figuring out the backstory.

Westworld is near the top of my list of things To Watch because one of the main showrunners was also the showrunner for Person of Interest. I'm a bit bitter Westworld got delayed so long by HBO (it was ready months and months before it aired) as I'd hoped any success it had would rub off on Person of Interest while it was still airing. Harrumph, harrumph. Still looking forward to watching it.

The OA is also on my list and I may just bump it up further thanks to your rec. I'd been wondering if anyone I knew had watched it (some folks I know on Twitter have, but not folks I know v. well).

The OA isn't perfect, but I found it quite addictive. It has that impossible-to-counterfeit authenticity of a show that was a labor of love created by one person. Okay, there might be a few plot holes, but the sensawunder is intense.

Another show with many of the same characteristics is Extant (not to be confused with Expanse). Extant is (or was) available on Amazon Prime.

ETA: Westworld was reportedly delayed because the show runners realized that they were getting tangled up in their own show mythology and halted production for several months while they reworked the back story. The result is so intricate that it almost demands multiple viewings, which might be more of an investment than many viewers want to make. But you can have faith that the story really is going somewhere, not just spinning off endlessly more complicated mysteries with no resolution.
Also, the cast is enormous and the production values impossibly lush; I can see why some of those episodes took a long time to assemble.

Huh. I didn't know that about Westworld but good for them for taking the time to get things right. I just recall it taking seemingly forever for the show to finally air and hadn't really tracked or heard the reasons why.

(Person of Interest also rewards multiple viewings.)

I know you've seen it, but we're watching all of News Radio again now that the last season (sadly sans Phil Hartmann) is available.

And The Good Place is fantastic.

Oh, I'm glad to hear you checked out The Good Place. We liked it a lot.

It may be time to revisit NewsRadio as it's been at least a couple of years and it's easily one of my favorite sitcoms of all time. Always enjoyable. It's one of those shows I refer to all the time and am always happy to watch. Could use some comedy right about now.

I still get so sad about Phil Hartman sometimes but am glad his work endures. We make Bill McNeal references all the time and I can easily hear that voice in my head.

The newest show that's grabbed me is Legion, mainly because Dan Stevens is effing brilliant. Note that I haven't read the comics, so I only know the story from bits I've caught on Wikipedia. Also, it's nice to see Jean Smart working again where I can see her.

Did you catch the first season of Shades of Blue last year? JLo and Ray Liotta playing crooked cops in NYC, being investigated by the FBI. Worth seeing for the two of them. The second season just started.

I've been really curious about Legion, enough so that I expect we'll get going on it sooner rather than later. Lately I've been waiting longer to start shows that are new (as it is), but I don't think I'll wait much longer on it.

Funny you should mention Shades of Blue as I just remembered it a couple of weeks ago & downloaded the episodes from season one that I didn't yet have handy. Also started downloading the new season. I like J-Lo enough as an actress and cop shows so I'm curious about it.

We loved The Get Down on Netflix. Lately we've been kind of haphazardly moving toward the end of both POI and The Good Wife. I've also started introducing mrissa to Star Trek: Voyager beginning with Season 5 as an experiment to see if that works.

Oh and I'd be curious about your reaction to Ascension if you get the chance. (Though it's a miniseries that never went anywhere, so.)

Given what a huge Baz Luhrmann fan I am, it's remarkable I haven't gotten around to The Get Down yet and I'm pleased to see multiple people have mentioned it. Yay! I should watch it sooner rather than later.

I never did watch all of Star Trek: Voyager, was really sporadic with my viewings of that show. Saw more of it than Enterprise (of which I've only seen a couple of episodes). Had been pondering watching all things Trek from start to finish one of these days but it's a daunting task. Haven't watched TNG since originally aired, has been at least a few years since watching TOS. Not sure I ever saw all of the Animated Series (a fave of Kevin's) and I'm not entirely sure I've seen every episode of Deep Space Nine (which was my fave after TOS).

When you guys do finish POI, I'd be curious to hear what you think. Needless to say, I have all kinds of thoughts on the show and the last episodes and so on.
