Peter Hessler's book, 'River Town'(maybe one word) is the must read book for Peace Corps people living in China, I haven't read it but I've heard really good things. Its about a Peace Corps volunteer living in a small town in China and just talks about his life out there. Do you have an itinerary yet?

Yes, I'll send you a copy.

I actually met him, he did a lecture at Bard a month or so ago. He is coming out with a new book soon.

Fiction? The best books I've read this year, at least the best contemporary novels:

White Teeth by Zadie Smith
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
Snow by Orhan Pamuk

None of them have anything to do with your trip though. Sometimes I like to read books about the place I'm visiting while I'm there, but I can't think of any books I've read about China recently. Oh well!

you shall know our velocity by dave eggers (loosely about two best friends traveling)
love in the time of cholera by gabriel garcia marquez (ill book)
the time travelers wife by audrey neffenegger (sp?) (the most moving story of love ever, also my girlfriends favorite jam)
controlled burn by scott wolven (book of short stories some of them intertwine)
