It could be spun twain,
as knotty as it is,

the forced bulb
in the kitchen. A match

to the stovetop gas
teases it from November

so it shoots roots
to the edge of the glass

as if to flush its nursery.
The bloom is an alien purple

to the sharp, cold light,
more onion than hyacinth.

I have a brand new betta fish. Red fish died last week. It was sad because I thought I had saved him, but sometimes infections damage a fish's organs and they never recover. The main fact I acquired this weekend: a DIY hot air solar balloon will not fly in the absence of sun, no matter how long you inflate it with a blow dryer. All was not lost! I thought I would be sad and lonely back in my apartment on Thanksgiving night, everyone I know in the city somewhere else, but I'm too exhausted to be anything but grateful that my office doesn't open until 10 AM tomorrow and that I can go to sleep soon. If I had a baby, I could dress him/her up in the cutest Halloween costume ever.

I think I left my cat alone for too long this weekend. She is acting neurotic. When I got back tonight she was chasing shadows on my wall and hopping in and out of the empty shower. My apartment is too small to contain both her neuroses and mine. It may be time to trade her in for a baby dinosaur.

Every `time I start a new Daniel Defoe novel, I mourn the fact that he died 252 years before I was born because I think he is the coolest man to have ever lived. Seriously.
