Having recently returned a lost kitten, I find myself wondering: how many of you on the Barge keep pets or other such companions, and of what species?

I ask because I have a quantity of veterinary knowledge and a certain affinity for animals, and would be more than willing to lend my expertise to anyone whose pets appear to be in poor health or low ( Read more... )

I rather think that the health of an animal becomes somewhat irrelevant after its demise.

I have a dog named MacGyver, and he's been a bit weird. Pouty, I guess. He whines a lot, but especially at night.

I see. Would you permit me to take a look at him? I may be able to pinpoint a cause.

Yeah, sure. Level seven, room fourteen. Whenever is fine, really. I only ever leave to walk him a few times a day.

I will be with you shortly, then, if that is alright. May I ask who I am visiting?

I imagine if D tried talking to it, it would just scream belligerently at him stopthat_destro February 7 2010, 18:42:44 UTC

Accipitridae is a fascinating family. Their visual acuity is almost unparalleled; as well as a density of receptor cells and nervous communication far bypassing any human's, they also have magnified vision, the better to seek out their prey.

But you surprise me. I would have thought it would be difficult to exercise such a bird in this environment.

[WOW HE MIGHT BE IN LOVE, IF ONLY YOU TALKED ABOUT SNAKES INSTEAD]

I agree. It's a magnificent creature... in its way.

I let it go where it wants. I don't have much... experience with birds.

[DON'T WORRY, D'S ENCYCLOPEDIC ANIMAL KNOWLEDGE ALSO EXTENDS TO REPTILES.]

You sound rather underwhelmed. An inheritance or an unwanted gift, perhaps?

I have a dog named Reyes. He's a brown-and-white Stabyhoun.

I also have a...well, she's a Tribble, if you can believe that. Her name is Cindy. I think they're asexual, actually, but I think of her as female.

A Stabyhoun, really? That is something of a rarity, Miss Libby. Only a few thousand of that breed exist.

[Pause. D fails at popular culture. You've broken him.]

...forgive me. What is a Tribble?

Really? I'd never even heard of the breed before I received him, so that makes sense. He was a present--I got him six months ago.

Have you ever seen Star Trek? Tribbles are an alien species of animal from that show. They're balls of fluff that make chirring noises and exude a calming effect when held.

I was never very interested in television, I'm afraid; my work tended to take up most of my time. Hence, these creatures are entirely new to me. I would be honoured to meet Cindy after you have recovered.

I have a small turtle, given to me several months ago. He seems to have done well, despite all that he's been through.

'All that he's been through'? This hardly seems the sort of place for a small turtle to be undergoing many misadventures.

He mostly wanders around my room. But he has been to a strange island, poked in the head, gone through two tanks, languished in warmth while my room froze and then been looked after by someone with a cat.
