Anyone else Vegan or Vegetarian? I've been vegetarian for... about a year-and-a-half now, I think. And I went vegan* about a month ago. Wondering if anyone else is, too ( Read more... )

Well, I'm not vegetarian (and certainly not vegan)...for one, I really like my meat, and two, my doctor actually insist on me eating it, due to diverse health problems in my past. (I especially need the iron in red meat...and yes, I know that there are alternatives in plants, but my body has trouble to absorb iron as it is, there is no reason to make it more difficult for it - be really careful about this...believe me, chronic iron defency is not a laughing matter. It's like spending your day in some kind of fog, because you are so unbelievable tired all the time ( ... )

In general, I hate the factory farming our food production has become, both with meat and produce. And while I do have sources for more humanely-treated animals, I've just become disinclined to eating flesh. There are alternatives that don't require any loss of life or destruction of land, so I'm good with that. In addition, I have high cholesterol, so the the further I stay away from animal products, the better ( ... )

tofu has a taste? I never noticed....(the main reason I only eat it with a lot of spice on it)

btw, noodles with spinach (or similiar) and nuts or seeds (whatever you like - I have a thing for pine nuts) is pretty tasty, too.

And have you ever tried yellow turnip? There might be a lot of vegetables you don't even know, because they are not common anymore.

Well, at least yellow turnip is not common anymore in Germany...because after the war, it was more or less the only thing people had to eat, so they developed a hate against it...and naturally the younger generation has mostly forgotten about it. But it tastes better than normal carots Imho.

I've been vegetarian for 14 years. At times I've been closer to the vegan end of the spectrum, but mostly I just try to limit dairy and find alternatives I'm happy with. Coconut milk is awesome in tea, coffee, hot chocolate and for baking- I don't miss milk at all in those, but if I'm wanting butter on toast or popcorn... sigh ( ... )

That is awesome, Lupin! I seriously admire you!
I haven't been able to find that book at my library, but I'm going to keep looking. Sounds great and I'm always looking for new recipes. The more I try things out, the better cook I become. I've always been afraid of going off recipe, but I've realized that the more I cook, the less trepidatious I am. Getting a box of fruit and veg, whatever is in season, from local farms has really expanded my skills and my families acceptance of new foods. We had rutabagas for the first time last week and totally dug them. Who knew? If it isn't corn, broccoli, carrots, or peas, it's nearly an alien species on most Americans' plates. Which is sad because there are just so many interesting vegetables out there.

Oh, yeah, that high cholesterol is not good. I really don't want to have a stroke and seriously effect the rest of my life. Bacon just isn't worth it to me, especially when they make such good veggie bacon.

There is this cool movement you might have heard of called "Meatless Mondays." I have a couple friends doing that, to get their foot in the veggie door. I have one friend who did that and then progressed to just one meat night rather than the other way around. Honestly, though, any bit of removal of meat from the diet can only be good. I applaud anyone who is open to not relying on meat for every meal or every day. Way to go!

Hi, my name is Gluten-free; I spent so long being sad when I couldn't eat something that now when I cook and bake for people (like baking committee at work or when I'm working with kids) I end up preparing food based on what they can eat. I've been doing a lot of vegan and vegetarian cooking lately, with vegan coworkers and vegetarian roommate ( ... )

Oh, I'm open to any recipes, really. The more I cook, the more knowledgeable I am in the kitchen. I love vegan baking and cooking. It isn't nearly as time consuming as meat cooking, but so much more interesting to me. I usually use ground flaxseed for my egg replacer, mainly because my son eats all the bananas in the house and my wife and daughter can't stand them. They're odd. So I just keep a bag of good ol' Bob's Red Mill flaxseed in the fridge.

I've been very happy to see so many gluten-free books, products, and sites these days! I'm not gluten-free but my mom is and so I always have an eye out for it. I remember back in the way-back (7-8 years ago) when gluten-free was such a rarity to see in anything.
