Dear Mel,

You deserve more than this letter, but it's the last thing I have to give. Since your departure from my life and since your relief and joy at being free from the pain your sickness had inflicted upon you I have been a mixed bag of emotions. People have, in expressing their sorrow for my loss, retold facts about the loss of their pets;

Looking at that picture, I remember petting your dog's head and walking side-by-side with her, and I remember it so clearly that it was like I had known her for months and parted company with her just days ago. She truly was a special dog. She was such a faithful momentary companion to a person she had never known before that I can hardly begin to imagine the loyalty and love she had provided to one who had cared for her for so many years.

I don't know how you feel because, really, no one ever knows how another person feels, but I have a sense of how much of ourselves we can pour into our pets, and I recognize that there is a bond there that has no parallel. I don't personally know what that was like for you, but I do know that Mel was a truly great dog, and that alone makes your loss profoundly tragic. I'm so sorry to hear of it.
