Influenced by a book

Hi LJ People,

A group of librarians in my district and I are doing a book study on the book, It's Complicated, by Danah Boyd.  The book is about how teens use the internet.  We're still in the early chapters, but one thing that I've already gotten out of this, is that I really don't like Facebook.  I never have.  On the other hand, I can't give up ( Read more... )

Hey, it's very good to see you here! And are you going to be at TLA? I'll be there on Friday!

My boss bought me tickets to the lunch with Maggie Stiefvater, which is cool but not as cool as getting to see you. How early will you be there Friday? Maybe we could get Starbucks?

Can you come to my presentation at 11? (I'm pretty sure it's at 11 - it's the "Robots in the Library" one.) You get to play with robots!

I'm not on Facebook and have no plans to sign up. I'd love to know more about that book. Sounds fascinating. I'll friend your new account. It's a similar name to the one you had before leapin jot, isn't it?

PS good to see you post again!

I thought I replied to this this morning. Gotta re-figure out this LJ thing I guess.

Comment from earlier:

Hi St. Margarets! Lovely to see you again! The book is really interesting because it helps you to see from a teen's perspective and understand their goals. One of the first big points that the author makes is that teens go online for privacy! Most teens get so little alone time between their scheduled events and the way parents have had to get protective that they want somewhere to hang out with their friends where their parents and siblings won't interfere. However, from an adult perspective, they're being far too casual in a completely public place where they don't know who else is listening. Would you call that competing interests? Not sure. But very thought provoking discussion.

I heard the author of that bok on NPR a few weeks back, and man do I want to read it! Sadly, the library doesn't have it yet.

I'll have to go and look for that. Another librarian found this book and told us about it, so I hadn't really heard about it when I began reading it.
