That's horrible! And deeply, deeply illogical. How can any government grant rights to some citizens and not to others? That doesn't WORK in the long run!

And no, there's nothing on The Petition Site yet. I just looked.

Canadian friends have described Harper as "Bush in a parka." That's as good a description as any I've heard.

Apparently this was pulled off stealthily, so I'm waiting to see if there are challenges from saner Canadians.

Well, it looks like Harper ISN'T challenging same-sex marriage legality. From CBC in Canada:

Earlier Thursday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper insisted his government doesn't want to reopen the debate over same-sex marriage, despite newly-revealed legal arguments from a federal lawyer that a same-sex marriage performed in Canada is not valid if it isn't recognized as legal in the place where the couple lives.

"When we first came to office we had a vote on this issue. We have no intention of further reopening or opening this issue," Harper said at a shipbuilding announcement in Halifax, adding that he did not know the details of the government's submission in this case.

At a second shipbuilding event in B.C., the prime minister reiterated his position, saying the law "recognizes same-sex marriage in Canada and the government is not going to reopen that issue."So apparently the guy who spoke was one lawyer employed by the Federal Government of Canada, and people thought that he was speaking FOR the Federal Government of Canada. Ha.

Plausible deniability

My guess is the bastard was testing the waters to see if he could use homophobia in the next election. He got into office in the first place promising to abolish marriage equality.

*hugs* Just saw this a couple of hours ago via lanning's lj, but then LJ went down (as it's been doing on and off all day), and I couldn't repost.

Called Suzan, and the first thing we asked each other was, "Is P and J's marriage affected?" I thought you guys were still US citizens at the time you married.

Fucking conservative assholes. Hell, even The Shrub didn't dare go this far.

Once the lawsuits and the floods of mail bury this bastard's government, he'll regret this reckless act. I'm just sorry for the innocent Canadians (and non-Canadians), LGBT and straight, that this hurts. Because it's just a pointless, stupid drain of finances on the country, and bad feeling all around. Total stupidity. That's the "Conservatives" for you.

Let the lawsuits commence!

And, from the article I read: Critics of this attack on LGBT people have noted both online and off that if gay marriages are now without legal standing in Canada if the couple’s homeland forbids them, are Middle Eastern women living in Canada now stripped of their rights to ( ... )

Yeah... It'll be interesting. But, hey, we had two ceremonies already - a Wiccan handfasting at Mediawest, then the ceremony in Niagara Falls a couple of years later -- if we have to marry a third time, then what the hell. I'd marry her a dozen times if necessary!

I'm just constantly baffled by the fact politicians - with all there is to sort out in the world - spend so much time and energy on something that doesn't affect anyone negatively. It makes a great positive difference to the same sex couples who can now marry and their families and it affects nobody else at all. That's what gets me. It has no down side that I can see, so why spend so much time fighting it? Even if that's for religious reasons, well nobody wants to make it compulsory. If a person thinks marrying someone of the same sex is wrong then they can just, you know, not marry someone of the same sex. They can't impose what they believe on everyone. That's religious tyranny of the type they will froth at the mouth about if you refer to that tyranny as "Sharia Law".

Oh, don't get me started.

Harper got in catering to religious exrremists and oil money. I suppose he has to do something homophobic once in awhile to keep up his cred. You can't convince me that this was just some lawyer babbling at random; it makes me wonder what they're up to, to want this distraction, or whether they're just testing the waters.

Since Canada accepts common-law marriage as valid for residency, this brain-freeze shouldn't affect our residence status. I kind of like the idea of marrying again, anyway. My wife made a fabulous cake for our first one, and we haven't thrown a party in awhile.

I think the blowback on this one may be far more than they expected. I wouldn't be surprised if they reverse course on this. *hugs*

They're already issuing denials like mad. And friends are emailing saying "If you get married again, invite me!"

That would put TPTB in the peculiar situation of issuing a marriage license to a couple who is already married. I'm sure the red tape would be amazing.
