does said neighbor have a tendency to drop by for long chats? If so, are they the kind where said neighbor talks at you rather than with you?

I know the feeling. I do that sometimes :) It may be a bit selfish, but I think that can be excused sometimes.

Whatever dude! Sometimes 11:15 isn't the time to knock on people's doors, just like 3:15 am might not be the time to call someone's cell. The general rule is you knock or call twice if it's a 'real emergency,' right? And you're presumably not this person's only source for a dead battery jump or help? If he needed a ride to the hospital, I'm sure the knocking would have been more urgent and insistent. It is totally fair to not be up for a long conversation. Maybe you could even tell your neighbor to knock a special knock if he ever has an emergency. Just saying, even though you're not asking for anyone to tell you it's okay, I do think it's okay and I think it is a stretch to conclude you're a real meanie. But maybe you are a little... well... awkward. :)
