I saw jack rose and glenn jones play a couple of years ago at the cleveland museum of contemporary art. the people who booked/ran the show did it on the same night as some art opening, and didn't really know what to do with the performers. they ended up setting them up outside under a little tent with a small amp for their guitars. the set was constantly interrupted by beourgie art people loudly walking in and out of the building. rose at one point had said to the small attentive audience "i feel like i'm playing a fucking birthday party."
Terrible, terrible news. I saw him at the Eyedrum earlier this year and he was excellent. Talked to him for a while at his merch table, a really nice and relatable guy.

picked up the Jack Rose/Black Twig Pickers record when i saw them in Blacksburg, VA just a few months ago. i guess that - and the 2007 Terrastock - are the only times i've seen him live. this is something of a mindblast, something i'll be digesting for a *long* time. all i can remember is .. Feb 2001 i was at a bookstore in Winston-Salem. Eugene Chadbourne's playing with some devilish flu. mentions that John Fahey had died that day - that's the first i knew - and plays some *brutal* tribute(?), 10 minutes, on the banjo. anyway, Rose an' the Twigs had just completed a short an' successful British tour in November.
