I just went and looked it up to see what you're talking about. I am impressed they got someone who can actually sing on one of these shows! Given the number of people who can sing, its surprising how seldom this happens...
She must be pretty stoked with the audience reaction; it's awesome that she got to go and sing in front of an appreciative audience like she wanted to, she seems pretty happy with it, and hopefully will not be upset by the resulting idiocy. She seems like an interesting, fun, characterful lady, so I'm happy if she's happy.
The judges managed to make themselves look like idiots though, "biggest shock they ever had", "everyone was against you but then..." etc. Just be real, people. It would have been nice if they could have just said that it was great, and treated her with respect not like something weird ( ... )

I shouldn't use brackety things in lj comments, or they confuse the lj; must remember that.

but his voice was remarkable, this woman is simply good. They're saying you can't possibly have a good voice when you look like that. When it was him it was WOW! This guy is amazing. Good looking or not that voice was going to get him somewhere. Her voice is like a dozen at the local operatic society. Sorry to sound harsh. I think she's lively butif she wins it will be for the wrong reasons.

*shrug*

I'm not as well-versed in these matters as you, obviously, but I do know that Paul Potts had had singing lessons and I'm not sure whether Susan Boyle has or not.

I do know that they both deserve every success that's coming to them. And so does every church choir and Sweet Adelines member.

Frankly, what amazed me was not "OMG, you can sing well even if you don't have a tight arse and perky tits!" "Mama" Cass Elliot is one of my personal heroes, and my biggest complaint about today's mainstream recording industry is that it puts a lot more emphasis on whether a woman will look good squirming around on stage in a skimpy vinyl outfit than on whether she has any actual musical talent. There are plenty of attractive people that have talent, but there are many, many more people - generally attractive teenage girls - who aren't particularly talented, but have had singing careers elevated above more talented people because of the aforementioned tight arses and perky tits (TAPT). It's why I actively work to find alternate ways of supporting talented artists that don't have recording industry support ( ... )

Thank you so, so much for sharing that. I hadn't seen or heard of Susan Boyle until now, and her performance was so moving that I'm literally in tears. Not only could I listen to her all day long, but the fact that she so well "turned them on their ears" (excellent, Nan!) literally made me stand up and cheer. This is so inspiring to see, and I'm pleased beyond words that someone, somewhere out there CAN still recognize real talent when it bites them on the ass. Watching American Idol this season had nearly convinced me that all hope was lost (if I heard one more judge comment on a contestant's outfit, "look", or "complete package" again...!), so my faith in humanity has literally been renewed.

I'm going to post the YouTube vid everywhere I can imagine. Thanks again for sharing this.
