this is a perfect argument in support of Daniel Dennett's idea that children should not be considered a member of a particular religion until they are old enough to make that choice for themselves. if actually encoded into the law, such a concept would leave the first amendment protections unfettered and yet still allow for the protection of the children of people who hold absurd beliefs without revoking their parental authority outright.

those were my thoughts exactly. when i first heard Dennett suggest that, i was struck by how simple of an idea it is, yet how problematic it would be for the majority of Americans.
