The content on each of these pages (the login page, the edit-profile page, the pick-a-language page etc) is made up of "controls". Some are text controls: they just show a string of text. Others are pushbutton controls, and in the login page I have a series of five horizontal scrollbar controls

I've always found the trade-off of skills irritating when I was playing the Sims.
Seems to me the Sims skill sets were based on a table of 100%, and you could select your skill levels until they totalled 100. It was like you had this bank account, and you'd withdraw from it.
I guess yours was the same, but you're saying that the bank was making automatic alterations from previous skills. Weird.
I think your solution of light bars is simple and attractive.
