The last day of our cross-country trip went something like this:

As our journey continues, we are starting to head back towards the East Coast:

• July 29: Crossed the Golden State in Friday rush hour traffic and arrived in Reno quite a bit later than expected. Checked out some casinos and the surrounding downtown area. Did a little gambling at the classy Silver Legacy.

• July 13: Took a scenic lunch cruise on Steamboat Natchez along the industrialized Mississippi river delta. Looked around the Mardi Gras and Historic Voodoo museums. Went to a unique club.

Once again, we're about a day behind schedule, delayed by a hurricane, but are otherwise proceeding as planned:

• July 8: Took a look at the Smokies from the Space Needle. Went for an exhausting but deeply satisfying three hour hike to the "Chimney Tops." Crossed the entire park and then made a short stop in Cherokee, NC. Arrived in Atlanta ( Read more... )

With just over a week on the road, here's a short summary of what we've done so far:

• June 30: Packed and cleaned for much of the day. Finally left New York around 7 p.m. and drove till 5 a.m. the next morning with a single stop at a Waffle House in West Virginia. Slept for 5 hours.

After almost two years of planning and dreaming, we are finally doing it! So far, we've paid a mandatory visit to my parents in Memphis, and now we are free to roam the country as we see fit.
